A fragrant festival of flowers
When: First weekend in February.
Where: Chiang Mai, Thailand.
During this fragrant and vibrant festival, sculptures of temples, animals and even scenes from the Ramayana (the Hindu stories of the Gods) are made from flowers and paraded through the streets of Chiang Mai in Thailand.
The city is literally flooded with colour, from the electric oranges and vibrant purples of the bougainvillea, to the more delicate shades of pink, white and purple petunias. There’s the striking scarlet of poinsettias and salvias, yellow and white chrysanthemums, and more than 3000 species of orchid on display. Homes and shops display colorful flower boxes and the sheer profusion of colour gives Chiang Mai its name of “The Rose of Northern Thailand’”.
Apart from the amazing parades themselves, there are endless floral displays, local handicrafts stalls and beauty parades in true Thai style.
