When: 18th May every year
Where: Barugo, Leyte, Philippines

The Sanggutan Festival honors the ancient methods of coconut wine processing and takes the form of a dance that portrays the winemaking process during the old times in Leyte.

A “sanggut” (or scythe) is used to gather sap from the coconut buds which is then fermented to make the wine (called tuba). The costumes are the everyday wear of the mananggete (wine maker) and his family, which are mainly red because the tuba stains everything and everyone that it touches!
